Ficly Blogger-In-Chieftess

I am a self-proclaimed member of the LoA (League of Awesomeness): Mistress of Well-Intentioned Indecision.

Special Needs Teacher, wife, mother of two, center-brained, imaginative, pragmatist. Sometimes I sing. Sometimes I take pictures. Sometimes I doodle or make stuff.
I just have too many irons in the fire.. I like fire.. it is pretty and warm.. I like to dance and sing by the fire, but I am careful. I always remember who I am.

I am Mistress Elshanor of Hawk Manor, Head Librarian, Keeper of the Secret Passageway to Mount Krully, and Keeper of the Ficlinomicon AND Kevin Lawver’s Pen. I think..

  1. I Ordered A Vacuum

A huge box sat on my porch in the rain. It wouldn’t fit through the door. I stood in my galoshes and raincoat and bright red umbrella and stared. I didn’t remember ordering something this large. I checked the shipping label and sure enough,...

  2. Mermaid Have I Loved

She sang me from the shore. I know not where I was before. Her eyes an iridescent blue. Her scales iridescent, too. Prismatic was her gaze, holding me entranced. Dazzled, I knew not where I danced. Her touch was ice and electric, too. Her grip firm, as...

  3. Nothing Is As Nothing Does

Never have I ever seen nothing. Nothing is as nothing does. Never have I ever heard nothing. The tree of nothing never falls. Never have I ever tasted nothing. Nothing is so bittersweet. Never have I ever cried for nothing. Tears cannot fall from a str...

  4. Escape Foiled

I rounded the Italian restaurant. It had closed for the night. Too bad, because I know Amato would have driven this beast off. My wrists stung. My mouth was dry. How long had I been tied up? I could still taste the cotton gag. Heavy footsteps beat a rh...

  5. Vainglory Will Not Go Unpunished

We had been walking for weeks. My brother believed the goddess would give us safe passage wherever he led. We wound up the mountains, moving far north of our promised land to find passage through. This small village sent their best men to lead us, but ...

  6. The Mark

The little black spot appeared on her ankle and at first she thought it was just a mole. She dressed and rushed off to school. Her friends giggled and gathered at her locker like every other day and together they trooped the long way to class just to p...

  7. Nothing is Greater Than One

“There’s nothing under your bed,” the father yelled, exasperated at his cowering son who wanted a light on and a glass of water and his pillow fluffed and to be tucked in just so. Later, a strong box was discovered under the floorboar...

  8. You Know I Write Stories, Right?

There are few people who know me. I mean, really know me. Talking to me isn’t enough. That takes too much time. Conversations go off on tangents and you can say a lot without learning anything at all. To really know me, you have to read something...

  9. Bus Stop

“Listen, the city bus is no place for a 9 year old kid, so go home before Momma licks you!” Paulie’s eyes begged me not to go. The tears shone in the corners and I felt a lump grow in my throat. But he was the reason I was leaving. I ...

  10. Wendy Thomas-Silver

She thought of herself as the simple girl next door who happened to have inherited her Father’s thriving fast-food stand and her Mother’s red hair. She was proud of her Father, who, never having grandparents to spoil him had learned the val...

  11. The Best Thing

The best thing about being a child is the boundless energy and freedom to move as you please. Every slight raise in the surface walked upon is an ocean wave or a mountain or a high wire. Trees without low branches to climb or swings are wasted space. T...

  12. A Letter Inspired By The Septimus Heap Series

Dear Mistress Marcia, I regret to inform you that when you read this letter I will have been missing for 24 hours. It is not my fault and I was not trying to skip my magic history exam. A ghost told me to meet her at the pier at midnight. She was a for...

  13. Can't Get A Good Night's Sleep In An Epic Life

“You have the heart for it,” he’d said. Kira pondered what that might mean. He toyed with the golf-ball sized yellow diamond at the end of a golden chain around his neck as he lay on his mat. It was strange not hearing his mother darn...

  14. Volcanologist

Day 2 Scientist’s Log Venturing out onto the cooled lava flow, I took several pictures and collected samples. The air was stagnant with heat from both above and below. My cooling suit barely kept my body temperature near normal. Sweat ran down my...

  15. Emerging

To write is to stretch tired, cramped limbs and see what I can still do. My brain fires electricity to parts long deprived of spark. Awakened, a fire in my belly greater than any adrenaline rush pushes my fingers to type. Now, here, I take a first brea...

  16. The Big Things

Mom, for the food on the table every night, the clean clothes, the roof over my head, the hugs, the advice, and the babysitting, I love you.

  17. Can't Sail From Your Past, Either

The freighter cut through the waves like butter. He gazed out over the rolling sea. The blue sky and steely gray waves were vastly different from the yellow-orange sand dunes behind. The salty sea air was invigorating. The ship made a strange sound tha...

  18. Not A Place Dead

The iron gate stood open, red as ever. The wide, gray path leading from the gate was littered with leaves. Its low stone wall a simple boundary only, serving to keep the superstitious out and the remorseful souls in, but a curious eye easily could gaze...

  19. Sacrifice

“Drones, 4 o’clock.” Fetus announced. She ducked while I aimed over her back, but the sabre taser did not warm up. “Crap!” “Chips are wiped,” Fetus calmly intoned. “What do we do?!” “Duck.R...

  20. Going Down

“Oh no, Fetus, can you fix him?!” Suddenly, the mission seemed doomed. This was the first time panic had caused the rush of adrenaline to flood my capillaries. Something on the roof beeped. A machine began to whir. “No time!” I ...

  21. Just Do It

Superstition haunts the number 13. It can be lucky or unlucky depending where you are in the world. That’s a good reason not to do this today. I have always wanted to do this. Admiration for those who have done this before, maybe even awe, has in...

  22. Say Hello or Goodbye

I grew up in the countryside. Farmers wave when they pass by, whether on big machinery or in passenger vehicles or even on foot. The wave is an acknowledgment. Everyone has a different one. One may raise two fingers from the steering wheel for about 2 ...

  23. Lame Duck Day

Stuck in bed. A long list of things that need to be done runs rough my head. I can’t get up to do them, but I can jot them down. I begin to think of other things to write down, like goals, things to do outside the home, vacations I’d like t...

  24. National Weatherman's Day

“Happy Weatherman’s Day!” “Stop making up these ridiculous holidays, June.” “But look, I made you a storm in a bottle.” Harvey grabbed the bottle from June and threw it into the wastebasket with a loud smack. J...

  25. Create A Vacuum Day

Suspended void devoid of sound, light, air. I’d scream, but no one would hear. There is no forest. There is no Miss Zarves. I am not falling. I am not swimming. Floating. Unbeing, Unseeing, Unknowing. I am not me. There is no me. There is no nine...

  26. The Day The Music Died

I was young and reckless and selfish. He was mysterious, dangerous, and sinister. I stood bravely before him, ready to seal my fate. “What do you wish?” “I need to find my sister.” “Ah, yes. Separated at birth. Birth paren...

  27. Groundhog's Day

They call me Phil. Every year for some strange reason, one day they gather outside the door of my burrow and wait. Everything smells like them. There are lights. They can’t be quiet. It’s unnatural. Some years I toy with them, sneak out for...

  28. National Freedom Day

Men stood around, the air thick with unshared opinions, excitement, disgust, and even anger. Small whisperings and throat clearing echoed off the plaster ceiling and paneled walls, but the President couldn’t make out any of the words. His mind wa...

  29. The Cold Before Forgiveness

The cool gray rippled at the toss of first stone. A wind blew coldly across the pond alone. One heart beat, never warming to the bone. Siren wails out an urgent tone. Mother weeping madly into telephone. Child gone wandering in the cold alone. One foot...

  30. Prairie Wind

The wind blows anything not tied down across the prairie. Colleen’s hair whipped around her head as she marched across the gusts toward home. If only Grandma had let her skip school today, she’d have been able to help with the chickens and ...
