I’m not a writer, obviously, just someone who decided to string a few words together.

I really mean it, by the way. Don’t take my suggestions too seriously, I’m just an amateur. I do confess a love affair with words but, treacherous beasts, then have a mind of their own and often spurn my advances.

I’m here because those words needed a place to crash; there wasn’t enough room in my mind anymore, so they leaked out.

Sorry for the mess.

Stories

  1. Caveat Agentes

Ow. That hurt. Lyudmyla keeps telling me “Andriy, you’re getting to old for this.” and days like these do prove her point; lying down on the floor of a restroom isn’t what I had in mind when I joined the SZRU; I was expecting a ...

  2. Loop

At which point I eyed my “helper” accusingly, angered by this attempt at low humor. He looked surprised and then said “I thought you’d understand”, his face aggrieved with disappointment. As he turned away, I shouted ̶...

  3. Lambs to the Slaughter

“Five of you will stay”, she ordered the guards. “Send word once you capture one of the heathens.” Next morning, the same soldier presented himself at her door. “Your highness…”, then stopped, groping for words...

  4. Bump

I awkwardly bounced back, rubbing my bruised shoulder; hitting granite wouldn’t have been worse. The immovable object turned out to be a USPS uniform being filled by a fairly muscular body, one that probably wasn’t that much softer normally...

  5. First steps.

I looked up and saw that nothing and no one moved. Seeing stilled taxis, delivery trucks and buses was unsettling, but the sight of people as perilously balanced statues was mind-numbing; for a moment, I was as unmoving as the world around me. After wh...

  6. Standby

What do you do when the world stops? No, not “ends”, “stops”. It happens to me every Wednesday at 5:23 PM EST, just as I’m leaving work. Since nothing moves or works except for yours truly, I’m not sure how long it l...

  7. Indirect

I hid my shock at the sight; the Gemmlans were by far the richest and most ruthless of Aldynn’s gangs, until the king’s father put an end to them over two decades ago. All knew they were gone and rival gangs slid into relative obscurity, fe...

  8. Green

Thirsty. So thirsty. The sun weighs heavily on me and too much water is lost due to its harsh rays. I drink as much as I can, but not enough, not nearly enough as heat saps my strength, my arms growing steadily weaker as the day grows. At the hottest m...

  9. The Star

That woman shouldn’t be here; no one should, aside from those who passed. It’s not safe yet; whoever caused this is still out there. The spirit gazing upon the trespasser remembered once being called Taylor but little else, except this star which w...

  10. Time Wasted

Spending months inside the City’s oldest library, it seemed to others that I gathered more dust than wisdom or knowledge, each book adding frustration instead of epiphany in seeking one of the immortals. I had started my research confident it wou...

  11. Steam

I’m running out of steam, she thought at the end of another long day at the office. Amy shook her head, knowing she was lying to herself. Again. No, you ran out of steam months ago, that nagging and too honest voice reminded her. Remember when yo...

  12. Transfer Protocol

“I hear you’ve been transferred to the New York office”, Kevin said. “Bummer.” “Yeah, got the news last night. I’m really going to miss this place”, I lied, remembering when I asked, almost begged for thi...

  13. Parallel

He still had memories of what could be called his youth, when his people owned the night. He remembers their birth, emerging from the minds of humans, their fears and ignorance giving his people their power over what dwells in darkness. This time was o...

  14. Deprecated

In my younger days, my friends knew they could count on me. My children depended on me; I supported my wife as best I could, knowing Sharon would do the same. We tried to give our kids the lessons they needed back then, advice they asked for when they ...

  15. New

Yet darkness does not cause fear. It is not because something is unseen that terror grips our heart. It is because we put things in the darkness. We give birth to the beasts under our beds. We conceive of monsters in undiscovered lands or in our closet...

  16. GC

It is Thursday night again, time for the hunt to begin anew. The crisp December air will not deter my search, although I whisper a silent praise to the heavens, thanking them from withholding the expected deluge which would have surely ruined my quest....

  17. WAR Files

Dread grew in the room as the Overlord of Time walked in, eyes filled with ancient wisdom and rancor. Be seated, his ghostly voice demanded. Sitting in near terror, we waited for the Master to give us our orders. Today, the topic is War. I gathered all...

  18. Interrupt

I climb to the bookstore’s second floor, walking toward the cafe at the southern end; I always liked that place, with huge windows letting in so much sunlight you can forget winter is only a week away. I’m not the only one loving to sit dow...

  19. Disconnect

Twelve years later, while trying to offer my mom some comfort during the funeral, I think back on that day. Things didn’t go so great between dad and me after I started college, especially when I visited between semesters. I see now what an arrog...

  20. Reflection

I love her. I never believed in soulmates until I met her. She’s lived such a hard life yet found a way to survive things that would have crushed me. Going through all that and coming out whole just amazes me and her inner strength fills me with ...

  21. Regular expression.

I am not a writer, just a regular Joe expressing his whims with haphazardly chosen words. I don’t try to write well, I don’t attempt to provide new insight nor create anything that aspires to greatness. I don’t delve into my soul; the...

  22. Last In, First Out.

“Here you go”, Pop said, handing me a paper bag. Didn’t matter that he was three times my age, his massive, still muscular frame was probably as intimidating now as when he was a young man. “What is it?”, I asked, hesitati...

  23. End Loop.

Not only had I had fallen even lower than at any point in the past, but for the first time I knew I did. I’d call it my epiphany if it wasn’t such a lamentable realization. I could not sink lower. This was it. An odd sense of relief started...

  24. Corn shell.

But that was not meant to be. My dreams take me to a corn field, nary a baseball player in sight. As I walk through the endless green walls, I feel as though I am being watched. After a few more steps, I start noticing that the stalks are all leaning t...

  25. Stopped thread

Blue eyes are sometimes compared to the sky, but mine are more like the sea: changing in colour and intensity, hiding darker secrets below. If you find yourself looking straight into them, you will hear the siren’s call, beckoning you to dive int...

  26. Dead Process

Andie looked around, wondering what else her sister might have left behind with her signature, a jade cross. Aside from a dead body, that is. She picked up the cross, the ninth one so far this month. It would be up to ten, but cops beat her to the scen...

  27. Routine Start

Patrick was never fond of beginnings, empty things that only beg to be fed, giving nothing back until they die of surfeit. Easy enough, except beginnings are finicky, rejecting anything but the better morsels, draining one’s soul until they are s...
