Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Chris Meadows spent his formative years in Jonesboro, Arkansas, followed by the small-town environment of Cassville, Missouri, before moving to Springfield to attend Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). He graduated in 1996 with a degree in Mass Media, and returned a few years later for another degree in Computer Information Systems.

Most of Chris’s professional experience is in the customer service and technical writing fields. Chris has always enjoyed writing, and has been a moderator of two separate Usenet newsgroups. His other hobbies include collecting Japanese animation and Hong Kong action cinema, roleplaying, and the computer game City of Heroes.

Chris lives in Springfield, Missouri with his two cats, Benji and Diva. He is currently helping to organize a small gaming convention, Springfield G.A.M.E., at http://springfieldgame.com.

On the original version of Ficlets, Chris wrote many interesting tales. They may be found in the Ficlets archive.

  1. Put One Foot in Front of The Other

“But I don’t know how to use them!” Sera moaned. “Just relax!” Lisa advised. “You just have to learn to stop thinking about it and let your instincts take over. You’ll be fine. But now let’s see how you m...

  2. Entrapment (Deception Challenge)

The big, luxurious touring motorcycle was sitting unattended at the gas station. The engine was running, as if the driver had just stepped away for a minute. It was every cycle thief’s wet dream. Jason grinned as he settled onto the bike. This wa...

  3. A Trickle of Water

They finished in a tie, with James hanging out the window and laughing. “See? I knew all you needed was the proper encouragement.” “If you ever pull that crap again, I’ll…I’ll run you over,” Sera growled. James gri...

  4. Major Malfunction

Finally, the truck pulled up back at the starting line to the obstacle course. The drill instructor climbed down from the bed, and nodded. “Hmph.” “Well, how was that?” James asked, leaning out the window. “Those Maurauder...

  5. The Caving Club

“So how is it,” James asked as he spun the wheel, “that you have a hard time driving even now that you are a car? Shouldn’t it be as easy as walking now?” “You’d think so, wouldn’t you?” Sera said a...

  6. Marauded! (Retro Ficlet Challenge)

I had just hacked the Pentagon mainframe for the third time when I heard the sirens. Maybe they weren’t for me, but Jeanette Leroq, teen-uberhackeress-at-large, hadn’t stayed at large by being careless. I could always come back later if it was a fa...

  7. A New Acquisition (Retro Ficlet Challenge)

“But—why are they so small?” Nina asked. “Aren’t they supposed to be as big as horses?” “They are,” Alan said. He sighed, irritated. Wouldn’t she just let him get back to his work? “The terrarium is dimensionally transcendental.” ...

  8. Training Montage

“This is a Sig-Sauer P226. It will be your standard-issue sidearm. I won’t tell you you’ll eat, sleep, and make love with it, but you will want to keep it close to hand…” “This is a TASER. You’ll carry it when you ...

  9. A Brief History Lesson

“Great. So. Can you please tell me what the hell we’ve gotten ourselves into? Aegis…Marauders…car robots that…absorb people?” Lisa sighed. “It’s like this. A few years ago, someone finally cracked the AI problem. Not...

  10. Wake-Up Call

Lisa’s voice: “Good, he’s coming around.” James blinked his eyes open and looked blearily around. The room swam into focus. He was lying on a bed, in pajamas. Lisa was sitting in a chair by the bed. “Wha’ happened?&#...

  11. Bavarian Fire Drill

“I want your names,” I growled. “I want your ranks. I want your serial numbers. I want the names of your superiors. I want your frickin’ VINs! Cough up, you low-lifes!” Instead, they started to back away even faster, final...

  12. Project Sugar

Lisa was already out of her car and addressing the labcoats. “…can’t believe the nerve of you bastards!” James heard as he got out of the car. “Project Sugar is supposed to be in the experimental stages. Who gave you the right...

  13. The Aegis Base

A few minutes later, they pulled onto a private road with an armored gate and security checkpoint. Lisa and Fur stopped and talked with the people in the booth. James slid lower in his seat as impassive faces and cameras swiveled to examine them. Final...

  14. Hobson's Multiple Choice

“You’ve got two choices. Well, three, I guess.” The girl ticked them off on her fingers. “You can come with me back to Aegis regional HQ, you can try to fight us, or you can try to run away.” She frowned. “I can̵...

  15. An Answer, and More Questions

James climbed out of the car to meet the newcomer face to face. She was young—about the same age as he and Sera—with long brown hair, wearing a red leather jacket, slacks…and a gunbelt. James said the first thing that came to mind: “Who are...

  16. Big Cars Don't Cry

Sera’s voice faltered. “Actually, I…I think I want to be alone for a while. Just drive, OK?” “You got it, sis.” I can’t count the times I’ve driven my sister crazy, James reflected, but I never thought I̵...

  17. Open Up and Say Ahh

“Jamie…I don’t think it will work.” Sera sounded disappointed. “This thing only looks like a car. It has more in common with a tank. I don’t know if it even has a VIN.” “Well…we can still change the color, ...

  18. Boarding the Social Choo-Choo Train

Both the sports-car automechs froze when I stepped out. That was when I knew I had them. Time to engage in a little good old-fashioned social engineering. Or, as most would call it, “lying.” (Computer geeks have to have fancy names for ever...

  19. Marauded: Backstabber!

As Dugout hunched behind the stone wall, firing from his rifle, I moved to pick up the rifle that Flashback had dropped. It was long and deadly-looking, but I’d already found where the weapon manuals were stored and skimmed them at lightning spee...

  20. My Sister the Car

“But…what happened? He threw you in the trunk, and then…all that blood…” James trailed off. “Um…where are you?” “I’m in the car,” Sera’s voice said, coming out of the stereo speakers. James looked...

  21. Muffin Movie

That dreadful day left its mark on us forevermore. It was in the books we read, the movies we watched. Consider this trailer… The music came up: loud, discordant. It grated on the ears. The muffins rained from the skies as the music swelled. In the h...

  22. Fishers of Men

It wasn’t our fault. I kept telling myself that. We were the ones who’d been oppressed. We weren’t the wastrels. But the lady’s picture stayed with me, telling me otherwise. In my mind I could see her eyes looking down at me wit...

  23. This Challenge Has Legs

Squee!!! ZZ Top was in town! I was very, very, very, very excited, ‘cuz they roxxor my soxxor in a boxxor! OK, so maybe not exactly every teenybopper in my generation would be so quick to squee, but I grew up on ZZ Top—well, them and Ozzy. Quee...

  24. Becoming Robot

When the Marauders invaded the Aegis base, I ended up all alone in the sealed-off mech lab. I’d missed the evacuation orders—when you work where giant robots are clanking around all the time, you learn to tune out most distractions. Now I might...

  25. The Marauder Factory

We’d located the abandoned factory where the Marauders took truckloads of hostages. Per standing orders, we called in Aegis, the UN automech task force. There were only a few Marauders in the factory, and Aegis took them by surprise so that they ...

  26. Locked in the Dark

The Marauder strike force had blown the generator. Breakpoint—the transforming robot automech with whom I was partnered—and I were stuck in one of the automech-sized service corridors, between Blast Door 3F and Blast Door 3G, which had automaticall...
