I’m a lawyer (please keep booing and hissing to a minimum), born and raised in Kansas (please refrain from any Dorothy, Toto, or “not in Kansas anymore” references, or I may cut you). I enjoy travel, chocolate, old films, kitties, and music, among other things. Law school tried to kill my creative writing abilities, but I fought back, and then I discovered this site through twitter, and knew I would feel right at home. I never had a chance to enjoy the original Ficlets, so this is new ground for me, but I’m loving it so far.

Stories

  1. Life in the way

Sitting down at the keyboard, a blank screen in front of her, and nothing falling out of her fingers. Belabored typing brings nothing but a garbled mess. “Ah yes, she’s talking to herself now too. Brilliant.” “Maybe it’ll ...

  2. Solid

The icicle piercing my heart won’t be there forever. That’s the temporary nature of such things. It’s not made of metal or glass. Just water, frozen, the cold seeping into my very being. Eventually it will have to melt. My heart will ...

  3. Her Land

Her fingers left a trail along the glittering water, like champagne this time of day. The boat glided easily along the tawny shore, its saffron exterior reflecting back the water’s inner glow. The incidental princess leaned back and surveyed what...

  4. Contrived

The first time he saw her, he knew that she should be the one. She was a bit on the young side, but mature enough. Her walk had a bit of a skip to it, and she seemed to flit around like a small bird in that flower shop. They don’t make ’em ...

  5. The Last Step

He walked her to her front door. It was the least he could do, mostly to ease his own discomfort. He noticed the dew sparkling on the grass, illuminated by the moon. The paint peeling off the side of her house wasn’t so ugly in the moonlight. He ...

  6. Unlikely Companions

Why the hell is it so cold? I knew that there would be some discomfort involved, but I didn’t know that feeling the cold would be one of them. I’m not supposed to be conscious. The day before the lights went out, I sat in the park with . . ...

  7. Pecking Order

“Just look at her.” The teenage girls huddled together. Usually ruffling, preening, and cooing at each other over shiny new clothes and shoes, currently their attentions were on a lone figure across the yard. She was nearly identical to the...

  8. Micro Space

Look out there. Do you see that tiny blue speck? Can you even tell it apart from the other bright points of light surrounding it? How big you you think it is? Or how small? Maybe no smaller than an atom. Too small to ever really understand, but without...

  9. The Battle Begins

Erika stared back at the ugly little monster for a moment, distracted. The thing twisted around her clutching fingers, and bit her neatly on the first knuckle of her thumb. “OUCH! Stupid imp. That was a mistake.” She heard the scuffling und...

  10. Twenty minutes

The silence wakes her. Eyes open, she remains still in her bed until she remembers where she is. The house is so quiet. She pads out of her bedroom, dragging her fuzzy blue pillow, and walks into the empty living room, lit by the soft evening light. Sh...
