Dr. Tim’s Neurotic Rules of Ficly Life

[Disclaimer: This is not intended to be binding nor in any way an expectation of general members of Ficly, league members, family members or wearers of Member’s Only jackets]

1. Comment to Story posting ratio must exceed 5:1. Goal is 10:1. In other words, I write a story then find five others (at least) upon which to comment before writing another.

2. For every solo shot or sequel of my own material, I must write a sequel or prequel to the work of another author. If I’m going easy on myself, participating in a challenge also fulfills this requirement.

3. If someone comments on one of my stories, I go find one of theirs upon which to comment. It only seems fair, and I like to think it encourages commenting.

4. Awesomeness is the goal, always. Call me on it when I fail, please.

5. Clearly mark mature content and err on the side of caution.

6. Golden Rule remains in effect for all sequels, prequels, and comments.

Stories

  1. Intuition of Infatuation

Ricky going to the board stood out as he was the toughest kid in school. It being the fifth grade, that’s not saying much. Unbidden and glassy eyed he went gliding up to the board and began drawing a crude female form. Mrs. Hubbard started yellin...

  2. Green

Sometimes I dream in colors. A lot of the time, my dreams are green. Not a boring, basic green like you might see in a textbook or color wheel, but a shimmering green that’s just the right shade and every other shade and the same time. Like leave...

  3. The Unknown Brown of Chestnut

Though she sat only a few yards away Alex could hardly look at her for fear his ten year old heart would beat out of his chest. Demure and beyond cute her lightly freckled face beamed despite the classroom’s harsh lighting. Her green eyes twinkle...

  4. The Wolf and the Linch Pin

To keep a wheel on its axle, spinning along how you like, a linch pin is the thing to use. Likewise, most situations have a linch pin, that key factor keeping the cycle going. It’s the guy in a group of friends who always gets the party together ...

  5. A Most Important Outing

“Where you going?” he asked with his devil’s smile, all teeth and false affection. “Out,” she replied, hands fumbling and slipping over the bulky key chain as she struggled to get it into her purse. “Ha,” Devin...

  6. Cheers and Down We Go

“All hail Britannia! Marmalade and…” The boisterous cheering of her fellow airmen roused Molly from her lolling at the window. The sea was so beautiful beneath the scant clouds as they flew along. Spirits were high. Life seemed so gra...

  7. Here to Torment Me

“Are you here to torment me?” The question is growled with a faded British accent, the kind you get after too many years away from the home country. She looks across the card table with an uneasy squint that distorts her already wrinkled fa...

  8. Deer Crossing

“But Bambi, I…” Faline stammered, eyes wide and tearful. “Times change. Needs change,” Bambi said cooly. Thumper chuckled and flicked his cigarette against an oak, watching if it would spark the detritus among the roots. E...

  9. Of Steeples, Streets, and Childhood

The steeple of Liscum Road Parrish loomed over my neighborhood. Most of the time, it felt like it loomed over my entire childhood. As I got older I realized it was just a trick of how the streets wound up arranged, all fanning out from town center so t...

  10. The Schlub and The Descent

Some people look at the depravity and atrocities of war and say, indignantly and piously, this is why we should not have war. Yeah, right. As if you could wave a wand and say there is no more war. Wherever there is want, fear, envy, lust, and all those...

  11. Winner Announcement

Oh, I’ve done it all wrong. I put up a challenge but made it so wonky I can’t properly pick the winner. This, as well as putting the information on my profile, is the best I can do. Many, many thanks to the wonderful entries to my contrary ...

  12. Face Down on the Diving Board

Face down on the diving board, I stared into the chlorinated depths without really seeing. Though I knew it spoiled the melancholy repose I had to shift so my belt buckle wasn’t pinching me. Three piece suits are not made for lounging. To be fair...

  13. Voices in the Haze

Bits and pieces of conversation filtered through a haze of medication and pain. “…possibly permanent damage to his hearing.” “…least of his worries. That knee…” “Glasgow scale’s up to an 8 from a 7 ...

  14. Fear and Secrets on a Riverbank

Secrets are funny things, I well knew. Once brought to the light of day, there is no returning them to the quiet shadows from whence they came. Such things ought not to be taken lightly. A woman who takes secrets lightly is a gossip. A man who does so ...

  15. Celebrate the Light

Throw back Exult and cry triumphant Not cackling and dark As the shadow what howls at the moon Rejoice Let loose your shining self Bright and of life Screams the hero gladly at the sun

  16. On Regarding a Goddess on Linoleum

Bathed in the morning sun, Missy stood on the dingy linoleum. Keenly aware of the quiet storm brewing within himself, Karl took in every inch of her. From the blond hair going every direction, smeared eyeliner, untucked shirt, a skirt on sideways, to t...

  17. Percolating It Ain't

Percolate. Effort and random associations are struggling to steep the vapors of imagination with something more than retread ideas and glossy superficiality. I should be doing something else. This will amount to nothing anyway. I should go read ‘...

  18. Getting Back to the Test

“…damned if I do; damned if I don’t. Damned if I do; damned if I…” “Excuse me, what are you saying?” “Um, nothing. Sorry. Nothing.” “Is that supposed to be a Big Bird costume?” “Si...

  19. Not Entirely Naughty Haiku

That girl, over there I look, I dream, I wonder What she likes doing

  20. Missy in the Morning

Rather than with a start, Missy awoke with a sluggish mental trudge toward panic. The blue Star Wars print sheets were not hers. The orange, motel-style drapes would have been burned in her stylish apartment. This was neither her room nor her bed. Hand...

  21. It's Back

“…I’m a tiger when I want love. I’m a snake when we disagree…” Why can I never get that song out of my head? It ain’t exactly the best thing to be thinking about on the way home. Again, I have to stay late. Why...

  22. Laying on the Floor

On the bare floor of the now cleared out apartment, Valarie lay as still as she could. Her clothes had felt cumbersome and false, projections of assumed expectations, so she shed them. The fan circled lazily doing little more than giving urgency to the...

  23. Quiet Noise, Uncomfortable Unsilence

I used to try convincing him to stay, throwing out signs for friend, swing, play, dirt, and whatever else I thought might or should interest a nine year old. It’s no use though. There’s really no talking to him when he gets like this. The c...

  24. Que Pensez Vous

“Ecoutez moi bien. Nous n’avons pas le temps de repeter, et franchement ca fait long temps depuis que j’ai parle le Francais. Quand meme, je vais me debrouiller, d’accord? Que d’autre puis je faire?” Koff, koff…...

  25. Going to be a Long Apology

Senior Cochon folded his arms across his dour, gray suit. His eyes peeked out sternly from beneath the brim of his hat while his mouth twitch uneasily beneath the heavy mustache. Luis fidgeted in place, letting each foot take a turn kicking the other. ...

  26. Not to Be Outdone

She awoke to the sound of alarms and quickly receding footsteps. Her mind, still sluggish from heavily fortified food, struggled to make sense. This was sleeping time; experiments should be over. They had gone to wherever they went; things should be qu...

  27. Dreams in a Dead World

Navigating her way through the hatch, Ren went for the proto-goo dispenser. It wasn’t much of a breakfast, but it kept the hunger at bay. She sighed and replayed her night. It wasn’t much, but it beat the harsh, gray world out the porthole....

  28. Not the Best Realization

In the mirror behind the bar Karl considered his own angular features. The chin was a bit prominent, and the eyes were a little dark. Even in a mood as he was, he wouldn’t call himself unattractive. No, there was another problem. Missy came to a ...

  29. Chance is Another Word

Chance is another word It’s another way of saying All the failures I haven’t yet had Opportunity knocks, knocks hard I’m dropped on my butt Fate’s just a flavor of bad Chance is another word A promise life likes to make A lie to...

  30. She Came for the Party

“He’s been quite the gentleman,” Lucinda said sweetly, causing Ben’s heart to leap in his chest. His boss did not answer, having already lost interest in the topic as he wandered towards the assortment of bottles and decanters o...
