Ok, I’m back. One heart attack, a triple CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, pronounced cabbage) and two sessions of beating my computer into submission. I am back.

I’m old. Real old. I’m so old I remember when dialing a phone number actually involved using a dial.

I’ve worked as a projectionist, an armored car driver, a help desk tech, a museum tech and laserist, an historical interperter at Old Sturbridge Village, a university assistant at a planetarium and observatory. I’ve been a salesman, a techie, A union VP and a storyteller. I remember the Gemini missions, but was born after sputnik. I have a love of History, Technology, Space, my religion (Christianity) and my country. I believe there is more that binds us together than can tear us apart.

I’ve loved many, married one, was involuntarily divorced.

Oh and I suppose I should tell you. I don’t understand your music and when it comes to sports, I don’t care if the Red Sox beat the 49’ers for the Stanley cup or not. Not judging, it’s just me.

Stories

  1. A swing and a miss

First squad moves quickly, placing demo packs on each fighter or attack craft as they work their way down the line. Second squad provides overwatch, moving with staccato bursts of fire. Taking out those techs still in the hanger. I look for my target a...

  2. Inward

I reach an intersection. The corridor I am in continues straight, following the curve of the hull with a side corridor leading deeper into the vessel. I drop an IR marker and take the left. As I move I take out the lights. One slug to each panel and th...

  3. Entry

Ready the grapples. Deploy. Impact. Within 15 seconds thirty of us are on the outer skin of the enemy ship. My earphones tweet and my HUD directs me to the rally point. The LT. has the demo squad place the breaching charge, an open rectangle of explosi...

  4. Approach

One of the things that earthsiders don’t really realize is both how quiet and how noisy it is in space. When you are in your suit, there is no noise from outside. I watched explosions going off all around me in a silence as complete as if they were v...

  6. The hole

They drove the truck up to the barricade. ID’s were checked and they were allowed to pass. Another 75 yards and they pulled over and got out. They walked the final 50 yards to where the sappers had dug the hole. A tripod with a pulley to pull up the ...

  7. No rest for the weary

It’s time. Already? Yeah, they found another one. What time is it? Nearly two. Shit, I had less than four hours sleep. No rest for the weary. Come on, get your boots on. Do we know what kind it is? Thousand kilo, delayed action primed, probably a typ...

  8. Judgement part two

The chair spun around and seated in it was a man, about 4 feet tall, with wire glasses and a white mao jacket. He looked vaguely like a cross between Yoda and Heinrich Himmler He looked up and, in a thick Jewish accent shouted, “You Dolt! You Idjyet,...

  9. Judgement part one

I knew I was in trouble. I thought when I committed suicide that it would all end. There would be nothing. No more pain, no sorrow, no existence. Blissful oblivion. Instead I found myself in this room. White. It was like being inside of giant ping pong...

  10. John of Arc

It was my first week as an electricians helper that I met John. He was the kind of guy that would grow on you with time. Kinda like a fungus or a mold. He had his journeyman’s ticket and wasn’t above washing down lunch with the better part of a six...

  11. Coffee House Creep (pick up line challenge)

“I’m done with dating attractive women. They’re self centered, self righteous, and under medicated. Janice kept on harping about my needing to get a ‘regular job’. I’m an artist. I can’t be bothered with the mundane. And Nadine, I tried t...

  12. Wood workers shop

We made reproductions of 18th century chairs and cabinets in our shop. We used only hand tools and I found that there was almost a spiritual nature in the work. To shape the wood, you needed sharp tools. A dull chisel or plane iron didn’t slice the w...

  13. Count your blessings

I confess, this isn’t original. At a nursing home a group of Seniors were sitting around talking about all their ailments. “My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee,” said one. “Yes, I know,” said a...

  14. Glutton (seven deadly sins challenge)

You look at me and curse. Do you think I am unaware. I’ve heard the not quite whispered names you call me. I’ve seen the looks. Your shaking head and tsking. I’ve had strangers come up to me and tell me to my face that I am weak and unworthy. You...

  15. Pride (seven deadly sins challenge)

They said I was the best. He has the golden touch. When everyone else is losing in the market, I made out like a bandit. I saw opportunity. Buy low, sell high. So buy I did. And I sold too. And made a little on each transaction. But when the buyers sta...

  16. Natural Rights part four

Is a right to death a natural right? How many of us actually choose the way we die? Some can. I am a diabetic and as such I can “dig my grave one mouthful at a time”, by choosing what I eat. I could choose to smoke and thereby choose a death of hyp...

  17. Natural Rights part three

Among the natural rights we have, is the ability to worship the god or gods we please. For some this is the Judeo-Christian god. For others Allah, or Buddha, or the natural spirits. Some will reject the spiritual and worship science or the accumulation...

  18. Natural Rights part two

That is not to say that only for self interest do we gather into families. Families are there for emotional support, for caring, and dare I say, for love? The ability to love, the need to love and be loved is a basic human characteristic. It is true, t...

  19. Natural Rights part one

He looked back to the computer screen before him. The title “The Right To Death” in red letters sat there, like a challenge. Did he believe it? Was it fundamentally true? He pulled the keyboard closer and began to type. Is there a natural right to ...
