Heritage of the Storyteller

Nothing is nothing, and from it comes…something. Out of the ether we pull with crawling fingers, sometimes with timidity, sometimes with staccato hammer blows of swiftly flying phalanges. Like gods and goddesses of rhyme and prose, we rend from the great expanse of human consciousness bits and pieces of narrative expression.

What a marvel it is! What a wonder! Creation ex nihilo of legends without number, lives that are countless, horizons unbounded.

We practice the ageless art, the storytellers’ trade, to tell the untold, breathe life into fantasy, folly, adventure, and turmoil. Do so in full cognizance of the rich heritage before, the long line of liars and wordsmiths of yore. You are one of them. You are part of the lineage, weavers of the web.

Breathe deep and bring forth the whirlwind, you writers, creators of worlds.

I absolutely love this, you wrote it with the same passion and emotion that goes into all the good stories, and I know that everyone on this site will do their best to honour this rich heritage and etch their own legacy into the rocks of time.

Completely true but not the whole truth (then again what is?). Also I certainly agree with H.S. Wift as well.

That being said, more than anything else I feel connected to the other storytellers through out history (and perhaps the future as well) who began to speak and tell tales for truth, for entertainment, and if they feel what I feel, for themselves. I love creating worlds and populating them with people, flora and fauna. I erect strange monuments and birth sleeping horrors. Bizarre customs and ancient traditions become the foundation of new cultures. However I don’t know where I’d be without those that have come before me. I know that everything I read influences me (and hopefully forces me to grow). And thanks to Ficly I know that sometimes I have influenced others even as I have been influenced. You and I and the people that have come before us and the people that will come after us are all connected with passion, with creativity, with desire, and most of all with each other. It’s good to be here.

I had forgotten until after particularly vivid dreams that we are also the collectors, custodians and purveyors of all things Dream…

Don’t you just hate it when you leave out a really good line?

  • Robert Quick

Absolutely, continuously and most of all YES!

See, I agree with you Robert, and I try so desperately to convey something that is crystal clear in my mind into words and sentences, but more often than not, I feel as if I fall short. And then I wish I had some skills with art to portray what I see, because with so much interactive media these days, like movies and games, and I feel I could bring these worlds to life with such realism people would be enthralled. If only I had some talent…

You have talent, Luke. For one thing, you just inspired me to do something, gotta work quick, not ime to lose.

Thanks for making me feel like I’m a part of something extremely special, Dr. Tim. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you, and the ficly community, and I’m thankful everyday that I can instantly access so many likeminded and creative people through ficly.

I am going to repost this on the next blog if it is still applicable. On Ficly there should be a button (or a place we can post) that links to other contests (especially ones of limited duration), and also things like national writers month, or the three day book contest and things like that. Here is one I came across that ends Sept 26. It’s a challenge from beyond the normal ficly parameters but it seems right up our alley. What do you think? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129752769&sc=fb&cc=fp
