What's your saddest story to tell, Traveler?

We’ve all got a good tragedy, be it real or fictional, hiding within the depths of our minds. My question is, what’s yours? Is it a lost love or family member? Loss of a dream? Maybe something you’ve done?

Stipulations:
-1st person is preferred. Not exactly necessary, but I get a better feel for the character from first person.
-This is a tragedy challenge. I want to FEEL it. Try to be as deep as you can be.
-I don’t want 12 “lost love” stories. Be original!
