Is this a dream? Did I fall asleep? I can’t help but wonder as she hangs up her jacket on the back of my door. “So,” I say, breaking the silence. “Why are you here? How are you?” I silently kick myself for sounding so awkward.
She smiles and shifts her weight to the other foot. “Well,” she begins, her eyes on me, “I guess I just wanted to see you. I need to talk to you.” I am speechless. After a moment, she appears to come to a decision, and speaks again. “Listen, I know I turned you down before. I’ve been thinking a lot about that…about you and…this other girl that I, well, liked a lot…” My ears perk up at the past tense, but I know I shouldn’t interrupt her.
“Well, she’s very… unavailable, and I’ve just been doing a lot of thinking about my feelings and what I’ve been attracted to this year and everything that’s been going crazy and it kind of occurred to me. You are exactly what I look for all the time. And I was just so distracted by…her, that I didn’t see it.” She pauses. I can’t breathe.
