Introductions

“Who are you, and how do you know Michael?”

Her eyes glanced down for just a moment and then she spoke. “Michael and I were …associates. I sometimes helped him with his business.”

“And what business was that?” I asked in a non committal tone.

“Smuggling.” she said. “He was using a halal meat delivery company for a front. You’d be surprised at the restrictions some people place on moving goods from one place to another. Michael had the knack for getting things to where they were needed, with no questions asked.”

“That still doesn’t tell me who you are.”

“My name is Rashida bint Abu Mabeer.”

“And what do you know about me?” I asked.

“Michael had a big job coming up soon. He needed the help of some he could trust. He told me he sent for you, and if he couldn’t meet you I was supposed to. I didn’t think anything of it, until he was killed two days ago.”

“And what was it you were supposed to do if he couldn’t meet me?”

“Take you to his office.”

“Then let’s go to the office.”
