Over Coffee

“I’d like to ask a favor” I said as I sipped my black coffee. Rodgers leaned forward, but didn’t say a word as he waited for me to continue.

“I’d like to see the official report on Michaels death.”

He stared at me for a moment and then took a manila folder from his desk and handed it to me.

“Not much there. A couple of witness statements, coroners report. No forensics evidence to speak of. No shell casings, so it was probably a double barreled shotgun. Coroner’s report death was instantaneous, two shotgun blasts to the head and defensive wounds to the arms and hands.

“The witness statements say two men dragged him across the street but couldn’t understand what his last words were.”

“That’s right.” Rodgers said.

“How could the witness hear his last words, if he died instantly and his head was almost blown completely off?” I asked.

Rodgers put his coffee cup down and thought. “Yeah. How could they? Some thing here doesn’t add up.”

“I think I want to talk to those witnesses.” I said.

“I think so too.”
