The Day Of Ashura

I thought about it. The Muslim Brotherhood are planning some kind of attack. It would kill crusaders and apostates. Well I could figure out who the crusaders are easily enough, but who are the apostates?

“What is the Day of Ashura,” I asked Rodgers.

I was surprised when Clarke spoke up.

“Ashura means tenth. It refers to the tenth day of the month of Muharram on the muslim calendar. It’s commemorated by Shi’a Muslims as a day of mourning, recalling the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. He was killed at the battle of Karbala. Shrines at Karbala and Najaf are places of pilgrimage for Shi’a. More than two million pilgrims are expected to visit them during the ten days of commemoration this year.”

I’m afraid I had fallen into the habit of just thinking of him as Rodgers muscle. Now I got a chance to see a mind behind the muscle.

“How do you know this,” I asked.

“I’m Muslim,” he replied.

“You don’t look it,” I said with a smile.

“And you don’t look Baptist.”
