Sitting alone and nervous with her sandwich, Bryn was awash with emotions as she progressed through her first day of public school. This was a new experience for her for up until now, she had been home schooled and had no experience with this place called middle school. She was nervous, excited, scared and bright-eyed as she pondered the words of her brother.

Her older brother, who was quite sociable, had ensured that she was well prepared. As he dropped her off on his way to high school, his sage advice for her was this: “Make friends and be nice, but stay under the radar”.

So far, it was exactly as she expected and at the same time, exact opposite. She expected the bustle, gossip and cliques. She had not expected to be thoroughly ignored. Maybe that’s because she had followed her concerned brothers advice up till now. So She decided to break away from his sheltering wing and make a splash, whatever that may be. So much for staying under the radar.

She would make her grand entrance at the prom.

Into the third paragraph, this was really quite saddening – I imagine this kind of situation to be quite hard on the brother as well – wanting to see his sister do well like the protective type he seems to be…

GU really is going to have a tough time judging this – pitting the newbies against each other is going to leave some writers out in the cold! MH :)

I’m at a loss… how can you claim your prize (should you win) if you’re character is in 9th grade?

  3. Avatar The Third Robot

she’s in 8th grade, her older brother is.

    Is that not clear enough?

  4. Avatar H.S. Wift

Umm… not really, no. I thought that whatever school 8th grade is in (elementary, methinks) topped out at 8th grade. 9th grade happens somewhere else (high school?)

Ignoring what I may or may not know about the american educational system, a great story.

  5. Avatar H.S. Wift

    Oh, and what’s her surname?

  6. Avatar The Third Robot

Oh right, well where I’m from, Middle School tops off at grade 9 (or, again, ninth grade, depending on your location). I guess it got a little lost in international interpretation.

    Her last name is Mulligan.

  7. Avatar Ruby Slippers

Typically, elementary school is kindergarten through fifth grade, middle school / Jr. high is 6-8, and high school is 9-12. Not that it really matters too much, but yes it would be difficult for Bryn and her brother to be at the same school. Plus, her brother being a freshman he would be at the bottom of the pecking order. Regardless, it’s nice to meet a new character!

I was going to edit to make it fit American school, but then my story wouldn’t work. So I’m sticking with it.

  9. Avatar The Third Robot

After much thought and deliberation at my tedious retail job, I have decided to make editations to better fit the setting.

And her last name is now Melrose.

  10. Avatar ElshaHawk (LoA)

(as HE dropped her off; and it was exactly as she expected and AT the same time..)
    hm, a grand entrance..

  11. Avatar The Third Robot

Well I hope to play it out well… seeing as I never got homeschooled. And she’s not odd because she was homeschooled, she was homeschooled because she’s odd. (believe me, she is very odd)
