Because of their simplicity and their visual appeal, childrens books outsell all other genres.
Roald Dahl amongst many others wrote his books so they would appeal to adults as well as children.
Throughout history, books for children have been on the grey side of black humour.
You may be thinking by now that I have gone potty, sitting here pontificating but I assure you I am only trying to gauge your opinion about the underlying humour that lies beneath the writings in childrens literature.
Do you honestly agree that there is something in this field of thought or are people getting the wrong interpretation of such a simple little fairy story.

I agree but this seems more like fodder for a challenge, rather than a story itself.

    Sort of essay like almost.

I love picture books…I’m 17 but I love to babysit so I can read them =]

You are quick on the uptake (no pun intended.) I would rather a gathering of minds than a challenge. A discussion of childrens books where the humour is above their heads and ordained to catch the adults eye.

Yes! It’s brilliant when you reread childrens’ books at 17 because you find a lot of innuendo that you didn’t get (hopefully :S) when you were younger!

    of course,
    disney does it!

Well Disney can do it. It is sort of hit or miss with them. Pixar is better at it and though they often work together, they are not the same. A lot of stories and books for children are scary, violent, sometimes even sexual. Grimm’s Fairytales, some of the mother goose stuff, even slightly more modern stuff like Coraline have a great deal of subtext that it is beyond most children’s perception. Which is great because the meaning changes as you get older. You begin to recognize the depth of the story and can peal back layers of meaning.

yeah well the can be better than disney, but it is only because of disney’s vision, that they exist. remember they can see farther because they are standing on disney’s shoulders. by the way hey marli.

Hey there M.J.Y. Nice to see you around. You are right you know. Pixar is the elf that stands on the “Giants” shoulders.
I keep harping on Roald Dahl. I reckon he is the Edgar Alan Poe of fairy stories.

Anyone ever read “The Three Golden Keys” by Peter Sis? That is an amazing children’s book. I went back and found it again after several years. It covers some Czech history and folklore in addition to it’s strange and mystical storyline.

Will have a look for it thanks Jae.
