Calm Before the Storm

I had pulled up a game from my desktop that I hadn’t played since I was twelve. I had to distract myself or I’d start hitting things again. The phone had been ringing every two minutes for the past half an hour. Finally my sanity shield snapped and I pulled the phone off the receiver.

“What?!” I yelled down the phone.
“H-Hello?” Connor’s voice stammered down the phone.
“Sorry, I- I thought it was someone else.”
“You hoped it was Jake.”
“Far from it!” A laugh escaped from somewhere inside me. “I was stupid again Connor.”
“What now?” He sounded exasperated.
“He tried to… I mean… He…” I couldn’t finish or even express it in words. My eyes started burning.

“You want me to come over?”
“No, no,… We both have exams tomorrow anyway, right? I’ll be okay.”
“Sure?”
I nodded, forgetting that he couldn’t see me “Yeah.”
“Okay, well I’ll see you tomorrow, babe.”

My own reminder of exams sent me into a panic as soon as I set down the phone, and that night saw me forget about everything except the reign of James I.
