Ficly

Night Crawler

It was Theo’s shift for night watch. The boy meandered the stone streets of Veros begrudging, but alert to his duty. The full moon reflected across thick, warped windows of the church behind him. A light rain pattered along the ground.

He heard another rhythm, heavier, running across rooftops nearby. Snapping his attention upwards he just barely caught sight of a shadow as it dropped with grace into an alleyway. Theo clutched the hilt of his dagger and dodged in after the fleeting figure.

The alley was stark, quiet. Whatever had gone here before him was hiding now. He glanced about for any sign of the mystery guest.

A whoosh, and another set of footsteps landing behind him. The business end of a staff rested on his shoulder, a warning.

“Turn.” commanded a soft voice. He did so, his eyes meeting those of a creature. A girl, with scales glistening in the moonlight, and a crest of fins crowning her skull.

He smirked. “You’re that missing mergirl…”

“Quish.” she replied sternly. “I’m here to join you.”
