New Shoes

-I’d like to return this pair. The soles have worn thin really quickly.
-Let’s take a look at them. Hmm. You didn’t let them heal, did you?
-What?
-When the blisters came up; you didn’t give them time to recuperate.
-I, er – I thought that was a joke.
-Did you just ignore the squeals?
-All new shoes squeak a bit, I was just wearing them in.
-Wearing them in? Treated humanely, these shoes will last a lifetime. They will grow with you, becoming tougher, stronger and yet as soft as your own skin. What about the bleeding, did you ignore that?
-I, um, thought I’d stepped in some paint.
-Paint? These animals were screaming and bleeding in pain, you idiot.
-Oh, come on – they’re shoes, they don’t feel pain.
-It’s an essential part of the feedback mechanism. How do you expect them to grow tougher where you need it most without it? I’m going to have to put these down, and I’m going to pass on your details to the Animals & Clothing Protection League. Get out of my shop!
