Atheism

Avatar Author: Ronnie I have a hard time writing anything unless it makes me feel small and afraid. The universe is immense, and I am but a speck. Read Bio

Eternity happened before you.
Didn’t notice, did you?

The doctor pulls you forth into the world.
Why?
You gather the courage to hold hands with Stacy in 4th grade.
For what?
You get your first kiss when your 14.
So?
You have your first alcoholic drink and lose your virginity when your 19.
To what purpose?
You meet your future wife at 22.
Now what?
You are married at 25.
What’s left?
You receive that big promotion at 45.
And then?
You retire and move to a quiet house at 65.
How much is left?
You lie down and don’t wake up at 80.
Did you do what you wanted?

Eternity goes on without you.
Was there a point?

Not really proud of this story. I’ve been in a slump lately. I think it’s the depression reaching up to grab me again. Shrug, just some thoughts floating around in my head.

I like it! It’s like you characterize atheism. It reads well, too.

definitely depression that makes you apathetic.
I like the "did you do what you wanted?’ question. Because no matter what you believe, you have goals and want to to do something with your life.

    “Life is but a breath…”

But you can become part of Eternity. That’s the point.

Nice piece. Sums up how I felt about 3 years ago. I think the best quote I heard about this sort of thing was “Life has no dress rehersal.”

Take it from me, it’s much better being an optimistic, depressed atheist. Right now I’m pretty down, but also vaguely certain that things will turn out alright. I’m just hoping that I don’t get proven wrong.
