Release

“The area is cleared. Final check done.” the voice over the radio said. Paul reached over to the radio. “Copy.”

There was nothing else to say. The next step was in his hands. He was in the emergency release room of the power plant, located next to the reactors. Should something go wrong with the reactors, the excess energy would be vented into the room.

The reactor was reaching a critical stage and the venting of both excess energy and coolant were needing. Because of this double combination, for some reason, the system could not do it automatically, it had be done manually.

With the evacuation of the surrounding area completed, Paul could being the manual release. The room, along with him, would be flooded with the mixture. There was no chance of survival.

He had already accepted his fate. There was no point in waiting, even with a spare five minutes. The radio went off again. “Thank you.” Paul smiled, “No problem, end of line.” He reached over and typed in the command to release the build up.
