A Strange Resolution

He caught up to her in the parking lot. He wanted it to be her name that caused her to turn around, but it was his barking cough that made her pause.

“Charlie? What’re you doing? I heard you were sick.” She asked, eyes full of concern.

Slightly, doubled over, Charlie nodded weakly. “I am. I guess I needed to do this as soon as possible.”

“Do what?”

“I’m sorry for doing this now, me being sick and all.” Charlie paused, suddenly paralyzed with fear and indecision. “I’m so selfish- so stupidly selfish.” he muttered to himself.

“What is it?”

“You’ve been on my mind since New Year’s, and I wanted to get your number. To ask you out. On a date.” Charlie kept his eyes on Darlene’s face hoping to see any sign of her feelings, but her face was a mask.

“You came all the way out here, to ask me out, when you’re sick?”

“Yeah.” Charlie felt foolish.

“You’re right it is stupid. But also romantic- in a weird sort of way. Here.” She jotted something down on a piece of paper and held it out to him. Her number.

Score.
