“Could you love me if I ruled the world? If I was the world?”

She stood in front of the door, that damn door, with her hand on my face. We both knew the answer before she’d even finished the question. She half smiled. Her hand was burning and nothing at the same time.

“I could be yours.”

“No, you couldn’t,” I said. “You already knew that.” She sighed and nodded, stepping back and letting her hand fall to her side. She was everything; the universe existed inside of her. Her crooked smile stayed on her face, and she turned away to face the door.

It was a door of stars, of everything, just like her. But right now, to me, it only looked like darkness and emptiness. The dots of light didn’t matter.

She stepped into the stars without looking back.
