Black Frost

Whatever it was, it simply passed by. And it was freezing too, a black shiny frost fell like ash in front of the clear sky and moon. It was actually beautiful. But she was sure only a few minutes had passed since they all stepped outside. She wondered where the blackness was going, she could still hear it’s echo.

Years ago, standing on a platform in Spain, Summer learned about sound waves. Her dad told her to imagine the train moving on water. The waves in front were tight and high, the waves in back flat and thin, like echos. Noise moved the same way.

It was the same tonight. Whatever it was, it simply passed by. The scream-roar was still loud, like a car’s stereo, but with the doors shut.

Becky moaned “My ear”. As Becky pulled her own hair back, Summer screamed in horror…something black skittered inside a cut behind Becky’s ear.

“Y-Y-You have a cut…y-y-our ear…i-i-it’s got something-”

“So. Your ears bleeding too.”

The neighbors could only stare as the two teen girls did the buggy dance
