Audrey G. Burnett: Feeling Understood

“What’s your most recent sketch?” Crow asked as Elletra sat cross-legged on the floor with her warped and worn book and a cloth sack full of colored pencils.

“Serenity’s ornithopter.”

“The one with the green wings or the one that she crashed into Mercy’s Hotel with?” Crow chuckled.

Audrey grinned as she looked at the last drawing in her book. It was a tiny one-seater that did have green wings that flapped like a bat. The framework was complex with wood instead of the usual metals. It had intricate foot-pedals & the nose of the aircraft had a speaker that allowed Serenity to fly over the city and deliver important news.

“Green wings. I got a sketch of the one she crashed two weeks ago. I do like this new one better. The green makes it stand out more.” Audrey sighed, sharpening her pencils.

“Problems in the nest?” Crow asked after some silence.

“They still want me to change my name. My mom called me Hope today.”

“That’s an awful name. They should call you Defiance instead.”

Audrey grinned, “Not funny.”
