A Dying Breed III

“Gilan. You’ve grown.”

The fledgling nodded, getting to his feet with a smile. “We thought you’d never come back. Massimo took over your job for a while. But he’s been promoted recently. Now Tobias is in your place.” The shade nodded. “Warren will be pleased to see you back, father.” Hm… Father…

It was wonderful to be back.

The two slipped inside, fledgling still without his hood. How silly, he seemed. Did he not know the reason for it? Gilan will have to work on that lest he wish to end up with his head atop a pike. That has happened.

As the pair ventured deeper in their home, the scent grew stronger. As did the murmuring voices of their kin. Deep within his breast, Gavin felt something once hollow begin to thud with a slightly joyful rhythm once more. The sapphire cloaked boy of a family remember jabbered on about what the shade missed in his many years of absence. But as they entered the main cavity within safe haven, a booming voice cut him off.

“Welcome, brother.”
