THERE BE MONSTERS

I clutch the pages closer to my chest, once more surveying the dim scene before me. I have all the papers, but now I must find her. If I have any intention to escape, that is. Which I most certainly do. I’m not scared like I was earlier. It’s worse now that the building has settled and everything is quiet. Silence screams the truth, as they say. And I don’t like the truth enshrouding this place. Sanitariums have always terrified me. Oh but with him lurking around and the little girl missing, it’s so much worse. Paranoia has never been my thing until today. I could swear I can hear crying in the far of distance, but when I get to it’s point of origin, I find nothing. I hear scraping on the walls, cries from past occupants, shuffling of feet and the barking of orders.

I think he’s driven me mad.

“Mister!” It’s hoarse and very quiet. I stop walking look to where it came from.

There she is.

“Come out, darling, for we must leave!” She shakes her head.

“No, sir,” she says. “For there be a monster.”
