A Wine Tasting, Underage

Walking in with confidence
adds long and hard years
to my age,
like I’ve been working in the steel mills
or the department store, 9 to 5.
Or perhaps I’ve been divorced
one too many times, the first husband
caught cheating, the second ending in death,
the third still tied down to my dock.
But without the confidence,
I would be
an infant,
toddling around in my own mess,
aspiring to greatness,
I suppose.
