Into the Darkness

I couldn’t tell for sure, we were separated. We were always separated. Them and us. That’s how they learned to control us. Us and the aliens. It sounds dumb to say it aloud but I couldn’t help thinking it. Aliens.
We walk on separate sides of the street, use different stores, different parts of town. We lived in fenced in neighborhoods. I wasn’t sure of much anymore, it had been nine months since we found out about them. One year and nine months and I wasn’t sure if the fences were to keep them out, or us in.
I met him four months ago. He was different, I had seen him from across the fences. It was against the laws to cross them. I felt rather drawn to him. He had a nice smile, though no one smiled much these days. We were separated, I could see his eyes they followed me as I walked. I could only imagine him watching my own eyes follow him too.
A Keeper walked by and I dropped my eyes downward. I didn’t want anymore trouble. I had gotten into enough as it is. I took one more glance, his eyes dropped.
