Vanessa quickly jerked awake, almost hitting her head on the hot lamp above her. “Coming, Mrs. Warthton!”
She quickly turned off the lamp and grabbed the fabric she had been repairing, putting it in a drawer which she locked.
She bounded out of the basement to see Mrs. Warthton stomping towards her with a spatula. “I don’t have time for your hardheadedness, Ms. Blackrayne. I need you to clean the front hall before the inspectors get here. They can’t see this orphanage looking like a pigsty!”
“Yes, Mrs. Warthton.” Vanessa mumbled and sped to the front hall where there was a mop waiting for her.
She was almost done when she finally noticed Nathan staring at her from across the room.
“Hey Nathan, I didn’t see you there. What’s up?”
He came towards her slowly and whispered when he got within six inches from her face, “I went to the basement while you were sleeping. I saw what you were sleeping on. I know you’re the Ruby Spiderbite.”
Her eyes went wide as his smile grew just as big.
