Just a Second

“Thank you for coming, officer. I can’t believe this has happened. I run a reputable company here, not like those ‘fly-by-nights’.”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m sure you do. – So tell me again what happened.”

“Okay. He came in asking, practically begging, saying over and over again, ‘Can I borrow your time machine a sec?’ I thought it odd and began to explain to him the hourly rate. Then he said, ‘Actually, it won’t even take me that long – half a sec, maybe.’ and I tried to tell him it doesn’t work that way.”

“Is that when he grabbed the key from your hand?”

“Yes! Frankly officer, I didn’t know what to think of it. He grabbed the key and ran for the machine saying, ‘Just let me step inside, and turn it on’. I told him I couldn’t let him do that. I told him I’d need to charge him. Then he simply asked, ‘Please?’ and I didn’t know what to do!”

“So you let him turn it on?”

“Yes.”

“That’s when he died?”

“Yes! Oh it’s horrible!”

“Take your time.”

“Thanks.”

“Sure. – So, when did you find out about his grandfather?”
