Her pregnant belly was full of the life of the one who was going to save them all. The babe had already become a savior for her.
“Dear, would you bring me some cocoa beans and fresh nettle?”
“From the forest??”
“The baby needs it!”
He scampered off. The quest would take him the rest of the day, all night, and into the next. She smiled at her cleverness, and her husband’s dimness.
The knock came not 10 minutes later. She turned, beaming, in only a simple nightdress, her stomach protruding. “My Knight! You came to rescue me!” She rushed towards him, picking him up in a tight embrace. The babe inside her kicked. It was as excited as she. Pregnancy was the perfect cover to reunite with her lover. After all, it was his babe.
He caressed her fuzzy stomach. “How is the little savior?”
She chuckled seductively. “Perfect.” Suddenly her lover’s ears twitched. “What is it?” she squeaked in alarm.
“My mother’s calling.” He squinted in pain, “I must go.”
“No! Stay with me! I need you!”
