Noir: Badwill

Saturday is my day off. But it’s going to be a busy day, just the same. While the coffee is percolating, I go down to the foyer to get my morning paper; “RUMBLE IN CITY RESTAURANT.” What a blow to The Topaz! Of course, some people will come now just to see what else might happen; but not the kind of customers we prefer.

Over eggs and toast, I study the paper. By Shaw Lambone. Odd, I didn’t see any sharp-dressing reporters last night. Do they just make up these stories? But I know this one, at least, is true.

A story on page 7 catches my eye. “SHOE FACTORY BURNS; TOTAL LOSS.” That explains the sirens I heard last night. There’ve been so many fires since this depression started. A man’s business peters out; he renews his insurance; and next thing you know, flooooom. Carpozi Enterprises owned this factory. Two firemen injured, and 37 men put out of work.

I make my preparations for tonight’s excursion. I’m not a mechanic, but I think I can make sure Alberto DiSibio will need one.
