Ascension: Onwards

There was a long pause after I let go of the trigger. There was very little left of the end of the corridor, the explosive munitions having destroyed the armed crew, their barricaded position, and most of the closed bulkhead door behind them. I still left it several seconds, just in case, before hauling the fallen soldiers back to the boarding pod.

Two of them were dead outright, outdated but still effective small arms having served their purposes perfectly well. The other two had minor injuries, if any. My own were also insignificant, although the thigh hit had reduced power output on that leg.

“Kurzweil One to Firebase, we are minus two.”
“Firebase to Kurzweil One, diagnostics confirm you are combat effective.”
“Affirmative, Firebase.”
“Continue with mission, Kurzweil.”

I reflexively checked my weapon, autocycling a round through the action.

The others got the message and nodded, readying their weapons. It didn’t matter that we were reduced in number, we had to continue with the momentum of the strike.
