The Future is Hard to Hear

“You’re listening to my future?” she asked. I shushed her quickly.

The future is hard to hear.

It was a simple enough task. She was writing an article about my gift, like so many had before.

They all take the same approach. “Listen to me tonight at dinner.” “Listen to me tomorrow at work.” Something mundane, yet specific and easily verifiable.

Each time, I’d delivered, and the articles were always very positive.

You’d think something like that would drum up business, but I guess everyone is too skeptical, even after dozens of articles.

I wondered if this morning’s interview would be different, but the harder I tried to listen, the more I worried that maybe I had lost it.

After a while, I had to stop. The headaches were back. I told the woman that I couldn’t hear her afternoon meeting. She seemed disappointed, but not surprised. She thanked me and left.

As she crossed the street to her car, I saw the delivery truck speeding at her, and understood why I couldn’t hear her future.
