The problem with writing is that rarely does the muse hit us with a good idea when we are seated in front of writing desk or keyboard.
Ideas generally hit me when I am least able to use them. For this reason, I carry a small moleskein notebook and pen with me where ever I go. I can quickly jot the idea down, and maybe (or maybe not) use it in a story later. Sometimes, the things I jot down are not even story ideas, but names I might want to use in a story, or places, or other things.
Besides a small notebook, I keep a thesaurus handy while writing. If I don’t like the way a word sounds, I can use it to find another word that means pretty much the same thing. The cool thing is, the new word can actually give rise to a whole new story line all on it’s own.
So, things to have: Small notebook and pencil stub at all times, thesaurus when writing.
