Cassandra gazed dispassionately down at him with flickering eyes. “Jack, you know I can’t run a search on Kinetico without raising every birdie they’ve got.”

Jack inserted a flavor-stick into his cigarette and flicked the ignition. “You think I’m an idiot, Cassie? You can do it, I’m sure you can.”

“Jack, I don’t think you understand the magnitude of what you’re doing here. Free search like that hasn’t been allowed in the last decade—it doesn’t matter what I try to bypass; the Kinets will be all over us in minutes.”

“What do you care? You can only be turned off. Besides, what proof has there ever been that they even exist?” He inhaled, coughed. The room filled with acrid cherry.

“Well yes, Jack, now I think you’re an idiot. But I’ll do it—if you understand what you’re getting yourself into. This is blatantly against the rules.”

“Blata—what? The group needs the files, Cassie.”

“Understood.” A gun scanned into her hand, and she shot him in the chest. “We’re more powerful than you think, babycake.”
