Hobsons choice

Captains Log Day 8170

For the past 20 days the plan has been in place. It was hoped that enough of the colony would see the need for self sacrifice, and voluntarily enter the euthanasia program and be recycled. To have any of us survive, 6 in 10 must go. Only 6 percent of those needed volunteered for the program. Now it won’t be voluntary any more.

A governing council has been elected by the General Assembly. They’re drawing up a list. Criteria for selection has been kept secret. Each colonists age, skills, reproductive probability, the needs of the colony and a random number generation will decide who lives. When it’s published, the selected will report for recycling. Failure to report is a capital crime.

I’m not to be on the list. My services are considered too valuable to be lost. Supposedly my “Good Moral Character” was a deciding factor.

I can’t save us all. Do I set an example for the rest to follow and entering the vats myself, or stay and continue with the responsibility of command. Need to think.
