Scratches in the Stone

They met the Spring of 1985. Frozen in a moment, ignoring the hum of the engine even the fact that the radio was playing their favorite song, “Stone In Love”, all they could see was the space that separated their lips, still the lyrics faintly reminded them of their teenage love affair: “italic I would buy you everything your little heart desires cause I’m stone in love with you.”A few years later this song also was the dance song on their wedding day. It would also remind their son that love is strong as stone.
“well love would get you only so far”, him mom would say, a lesson she had tried to instill. He remembered this as he watched his father in the bedroom where he was trying to piece it together where it went wrong, his record playing their song but this time the song skipped.
The son inched toward his father.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ll get you a new record.”
“Its OK, its only a few scratches, it can be fixed”
His father took a look at his mother’s empty closet.
“It will be good as new, I promise."
