In the Shadows of Men (5)

At that moment, my Uncle and my cousin strode into the kitchen, without a glance at me or my Aunt and stared at the table. The room was silent for a moment but it was soon broken by my Uncle saying, “And why isn’t breakfast on the table Mary?”

My Aunt quickly stood up and headed back to the cooking range and said, “It’s Dana’s first day today and she doesn’t know what happens, so breakfast is a little delayed.”

As she stirred a tthe eggs my Uncle said, “And that’s your excuse?” he stood up and walked over to me. He crouched down as my Aunt had and said. “Then shouldn’t she be punished?” My Aunt looked up in horror. “She hasn’t done this before, give her a chance. She’s only five!”

Here my cousin pitched in, “Well I started working when I was four, mother, so why should she be any different.”

My Uncle looked into my eyes and I noticed for the first time how much resentment he carried. I boldly stared back. he broke his gaze first and said. “This is the last time this will happen. Understood?”
