This one is pretty good. The only part I found confusing is that you say Kyle thinks Vekler is Mossad, which is Israeli. But Kyle’s medals await him in Moscow, which suggests KGB. Did you get the two confused, or am I missing something? If Vekler is actually Mossad, what reason does Kyle have to go to Moscow, since he’s been working for the Israelis the whole time?
The last line should be the key. Vekler has recruited Kyle under a false flag, a Mossad operative pretending to be a SVR spy as he thinks Kyle will be more open to an approach from a Russian operative.
But Kyle also recruits under a false flag… the implication being that Vekler has recruited a double agent… and that Kyle has been feeding him misinformation.
I’m probably going to take another look at this, but I’m happy if people are a little confused at the end – I think the logic is there for folks to puzzle out.
Much obliged for the welcome, by the way! Very up for constructive crits. Of course, I haven’t looked at your comments on the other story yet… =)
Ehh. I was kinda hoping that I’d got the core of a good espionage plot into 1024 chars – the story’s sorta wrapped up.
Oh – if anybody wants to do a sequel or prequel to this story, do me a favour and keep it an espionage or spy story and not spy-fi or action-adventure. More John LeCarre than Ian Flemming, if you please.
