Obviously in a movie, they would move to the city, get a horrible boss and realise they preferred their old life. Where they would then fall in love and have many babies.
But perhaps this could go in a different direction – the pessimism of your character would indicate so – I don’t think they’re going to be happy ANYWHERE…
I agree that in a typical Hollywood movie, the big city will be demonized and have the heroes go back to the town they left. But I think a more interesting path lies in having a character desire the rush and pitfalls of the big city, finding contentment in the mad pace of successes and failures simply to feel alive. He (or she) might find a peculiar balance in life, if not happiness.

Your “more interesting path” would indeed be exactly what it says on the tin. That was a correct analysis of the concept. It is oft underused in Hollywood.
