Reminds me of Ben Bova’s work, especially those that involve the Rock Rats (such as the tome of the same name).

Sorry, I’m afraid this doesn’t work as a space opera, in my opinion. It’s far too gritty and realistic. Still, I like the story, so you’re getting lots of pencils from me!
