Trying to get into the mundane repetition of marriage?

I didn’t get it, other than the not-so-happy marriage theme, and the domineering (slightly) male thing going on. Could you some cleaning up on the punctuation.

I’m having a very hard time following along with what’s going on here. Is that final line supposed to infer that the husband simply wasn’t listening, and therefore thought his wife was being quiet because he didn’t hear anything she said?
