Reunion

Whatever the movies may have you believe, most adopted children never seek their birth parents. I hired the P.I. to look into your folks, who seemed distant and distrustful of me. They never told you they gave up a little girl, an accident from before they knew they would marry. By the time I learned the truth I was already under your spell, so I’ll never tell either. I think they disapprove of me because they suspect they know who I am.

I love you more than words can say, more than I ever dare tell you, and I couldn’t bear to give up any part of that. I have accepted that I will always love you more than you can return, and what you’ve given me is no less glorious for it.

When the minister said “Speak now or forever hold your peace,” a part of me almost died of fear. When we danced our first dance I thought I might die of happiness. Gowned and tuxedoed guests raise a toast.

To us.
