Very cool. Great job setting the scene from this guy’s perspective while giving us a good description of the thing sitting there and the clarification on the sail. Definitely felt the tension of that moment, curiosity and duty warring against urgency and novelty.
I like how everything is described in relation to the Viking;’s own knowledge and culture – for example the size comparison of the vessel to longboats – very effective in drawing the reader in there…
When you say “on the rocky beach rested” it infers that it’s actually landed. However, we’re informed later that it still hovers. I’m not sure “rested” is the right word.
Other than that, another excellent entry in a fantastic series.

As to the criticism, I see how that might be confusing and may try to revise. I am trying to say that it has landed on the beach, actually touching down. It hovered over the water on approach.
