After All This Time

She tried to catch his eye, to give him at least a brief smile as she approached. But he found something much more interesting to look at behind her, and refused giving any sort of acknowledgement of her presence.

So this is how things were going to be.

All the years, all the work, all the courage it took to finally tell her deepest secrets, and it comes to this. Rejection by one who was supposed to forgive.

She thought she should feel angry, that she should confront, make a scene, scream at the unfairness of the universe. Instead, she felt at peace. She also, somewhat oddly, pitied him.

He may not forgive, but she had already forgiven herself. And she smiled as she walked past him and on to her new life.
