real estate writer, let me just say that, what you did to connect with your son in another country was a genuine outpouring of love and goodwill that we don’t see very much these days. :) Don’t quit. You’ll build friendships soon and have much more success and fun on ficly.
I will always vote for sticking with writing, especially in this case as a means of you two staying connected. I would also say don’t worry too much about commenting on what each other writes. I wish I could be on here more often to read and to write, but time doesn’t allow. I make it a habit to read things at least twice before saying anything, hoping that it’s constructive or at least conveys what I really felt and thought. And it’s not like anyone on here’s an expert – writing is a solo journey that sites like this let you take with lots of folks around you. Cool in my book.
Come back. This is a great place, and it’s totally worth sticking around.
Not all of your Ficlies will get comments. Not all of them will receive good ratings, but every one of them will help make you a better writer. And you have the added bonus of being able to share something with your son.
One of the toughest parts of being a member of this community is taking critiques in stride. The vast majority of them are posted with the best intention, to help make your vision better. Personally, I enjoy offering suggestions as I feel it helps me become a better writer, being able to decipher improvements in other people’s work, translates into helping me spot them in my own.
I hope that you change your mind, and decide to come back. You may just happen to meet a few new friends, become a better writer, and most importantly, get to share a part of your son’s life.
Everybody seems to have summed up the massive advantages of Ficly both as a community and as a place of writing but I’m only too happy to add my voice to the pleas for you to return – both because of the promise you showed in your writing,, and the stunning sentiment behind you’re joining in the first place…
My advice would be to publish little often, rather than splurging several stories in quick succession, in my experience it results in more comments and a higher quality of work.
But maybe that’s just me – however you do it, come back if you feel you have more to give – I think you do…
You are all so kind and must really like my son. Drew said he feels like this website and you people are like another family to him. I see what he means. The reason I haven’t written anything is because I need to work and Drew would not read my stories. I have absolutely no thoughts or hopes of becoming a writer but would love to see something like that for Drew. So since Drew went to all this trouble and you responded I must return. I think I will follow the wisdom of Mostly Harmless and just not write as often. Now if anyone is looking for a great house in Columbus, Ohio contact me. I’ve got to get back to making a living. Thanks
I come to release my demons on paper so they don’t haunt my soal. if noone reads my ramblings, I’m ok. Tell her to share her pain. Be patient, Like love we all find our way eventually.
It’s so sweet to see a relationship like this where your mum would write to keep in touch with you! I know that ficly has saved my life and it makes me so happy to see something like this. Love lots to all of you!
