Renewal 4

I left out of the San Francisco Bay Area and headed East. Most people assume I would rather go to California to live my final days rather than leave, but the truth is I’ve worn out this western state and I need new scenery. I was heading through Nevada on a desolate stretch of road when I decided to make my first run at 200mph. I’d always wanted to go that fast, and I know this car won’t get me al the way there, but I’d never been above 100, so i downshifted and hit the gas.

The speed was rapid and furious, sliding the shifter into 5th I was approaching 160mph. The intensity of the situation was reflected in my focus. I had tunnel vision, nothing else mattered. Even the highway patrol officer shooting radar was left out of my vision.

He picked me up on his radar going 160, by the time he was in his car I was fast approaching 180. Along this long stretch of straight road there was no reason to do anything but pull over and accept my jail term.

But I didn’t.

I drove headlong into the mountains.
