Cold
Fog surrounded my mouth as I breathed out, rubbing my hands together. I blew on them, shivering ferociously and hugging my knees. I looked over at Kevin. He had a crooked smile on as we sat on my porch. Why he suggested we go outside in the middle of winter I don’t know, but I was freezing my ass off. My teeth clattered.
“You cold, Nick?” Kevin asked. I nodded. He smiled bigger. It was enough to make me warm for just a few seconds. Then the cold took over, and I shivered again. I was shaking more violently than before now. Even in my winter coat, I was turning into a Nicksicle. He lifted his arm for me to scoot underneath, and when I did, he brought his arm back down over my shoulder.
The cold fell away from me so fast that I thought that I would melt under his body heat. I expected a big puddle of frozen me to be at his feet in a matter of seconds. But no puddle appeared. The only thing that melted was my heart, as he held me in his arms. This was the perfect moment I’d been waiting for. “I love you, Kevin.”
