Eli Returns
I was shootin’ at sparrows and she just appeared. Honest. I asked if she was O.K. and she just ran off."
“Sarah, that true?” Lizzie asked.
“Yes, ma’am. I tried to go home but I ended up here.” Sarah answered.
“Well it turns out Eli needs to make a trip to town in the morning. He’ll take you back with him to find your parents. It’s getting late. You’ll have to stay here tonight. I won’t put a little girl out in the cold.” Lizzie said.
“Can I go now, Ma?” Willie yelled."
“Scoot!” Lizzie yelled, scowling at him and then winking at Sarah after Willie ran off to the barn.
It was after nine o’clock when Eli came home. He stepped inside, placed his hat on the rack, then walked over to the living room where Lizzie and Sarah were looking through a magazine called The Theatre. “That’s Ethel Barrymore,” Lizzie said, pointing to an 8X10 black-and-white picture inside the magazine. “She played Nora in a play called A Doll’s House. Do you like plays, Sarah?”
“Yes, ma’am, but in my time we mainly go to the movies.”
