Nine
“A baby has died in front of us,” K’Tea whispered. “We are cursed!”
Katya began to sob into her knees as Marvin – a Canadian newscaster, or at least he was before – and Jeremiah picked up the rigid child and placed her in the cold arms of her mother.
“Another wasted life,” Ricky whispered. “And we are quickly running out of girls to repopulate.” That got him a smack from Katya, still sobbing.
“Was Liz right?” Marvin asked Bill.
“What?”
“She said that it was your fault that them…”
“Vashta Nerada,” the Doctor chipped in.
“Yeah, them. Was that your fault?”
“Well, I…” Bill fidgeted with his bag.
“It was!” Kiante shouted.
“Shut it,” Bill said, grabbing his gun. “All of you!”
Everyone cowered back into the wall except for Marvin. “You don’t know who you’re messing with four-eyes.” He readied himself for a hands-on-fight, brushing his hands against the dusty wall behind him for grip.
Bang
He never turned around. The blood spat onto K’tea’s bald head.
Nine left on Planet Earth.
